A pipe just burst after dark. Here is the order that matters.

The sound is usually the first proof. A hiss becomes a spray, a ceiling darkens, or a closet starts raining on the water heater. In San Antonio the failure often sits on a slab, which means the water you see is not always the water you have to stop first. The first job is not mopping. The first job is shutting the correct valve.

Start at the fixture stop if the leak is clearly a toilet or a sink. If the spray is in a wall or a hall, go to the house shutoff. On many Bexar County lots that valve lives in a ground box near the front walk or at the meter. If the lid is buried in Bermuda grass, you are not the first person to lose a Saturday to it. If you cannot find the house valve, the meter valve is the next door. Closing the meter affects the whole service. That is better than watching a ceiling come down. Photograph the failure with the lights on. After-hours notes written from memory are how people forget that the ice-maker line was the one they touched last week.
