The parts that actually fail here
Fill valves lime up. Flappers warp. Flush valves weep. Hard water in San Antonio turns a five-dollar flapper into a six-month part. A running toilet can waste more water than a modest slab leak if it runs all month. We still test the meter, because both can be true at once.
Weak flush is often a partially closed supply, a clogged rim jets, or a low water level — not a need for a new $600 fixture. We clean jets and set the level before we talk replacement. Replacement makes sense when the porcelain is cracked, the bowl is unsanitary in a way parts cannot fix, or the trap is glazed with a decade of mineral.
On slabs, the closet flange rusts or sits below the finished floor after a tile overlay. That is how bathrooms pick up a sewer smell and a rocking bowl. A new wax ring on a sunken flange is a delay, not a repair.
Overflows and backups
If the bowl climbs and you did not flush a toy, stop using every other drain and read the sewer line page. Plunging a toilet that is backing up from the main only relocates sewage. If the overflow is a fill valve stuck open and the flapper is closed, shut the stop and that emergency is over.
Hotels and rentals near Alamo Plaza see more foreign-object clogs. Family houses near schools see more paper and wipe abuse. We would rather retrieve an object than cable a bowl so hard we crack it.
Sewage on the floor is an emergency plumber call. A ghost flush at 2 a.m. is annoying and expensive on the bill, but it is not a flood if the bowl is contained.

A one-bath house treats every overflow like a lockout, because it is. Say that on the form so we do not treat it like a cosmetic swap. A three-bath house can still have a sewer event. Count the fixtures that failed together.
Rental baths near downtown see more foreign objects and more “it was fine yesterday” messages. Write that guests just left. The inventory changes. So does the paper load. We would rather retrieve an object than cable a bowl into a crack.
If the smell is at the base and the bowl rocks, skip another wax ring from the hardware aisle. The flange is the conversation. Tile overlays in this city bury flanges. A ring cannot float a fixture forever.
