A toilet that never sleeps is a water bill with a lid

You hear it at 2 a.m. because the house is quiet, not because the toilet waited for night. A slow leak past a flapper drops the tank until the fill valve wakes. In San Antonio, hard-water film makes that leak ordinary. A flapper that lasted years in another city can be a six-month part here.

Shut the fixture stop. If the sound dies, you just proved the toilet is the singer. If the sound continues in a wall, you have a different leak. That is the whole diagnostic in two sentences.

A running toilet is usually not an emergency. It is expensive if you ignore it for a billing cycle. It becomes an emergency if the bowl overflows or if you cannot stop the fill. Overflow with a closed flapper is a fill valve. Overflow with a rising bowl and a closed tank is a drain or a sewer.

Wipes, “flushable” liners, and cat litter turn a repair into a retrieval. We would rather fish an object than crack a bowl with a heroic cable. If two toilets fail together, stop buying flappers and read sewer line.

Low-flow bowls on long, flat drains can be unhappy. That is a design issue common in some remodels. Replacing the same 1.28-gallon unit three times will not change the slope under the slab.

Phantom flushes at night are the same leak you ignore at noon. Hard water makes the flapper worse, not more mysterious. Replace the cheap part before you replace the fixture. If the new flapper fails in a month, the flush-valve seat may be the scaled surface that will not seal.

Low-flow bowls on long flat drains can be unhappy in slab houses. That is design, not a moral failing. If this is the third “efficient” toilet on the same line, measure the run before you buy a fourth box.
